Sell textbooks, used books, CDs, DVDs and other media items on half.com. There is no listing fee and one flat commission rate for all sales.

Half.com is known as one of the best places online to sell textbooks and other new and used books. But, the site also allows sellers to list other media items including VHS movies, DVDs and CDs. The site does not have listings for cassette tapes or LPs.

Sell Textbooks on Half.com

Half.com is most popular in the spring and fall when students buy and sell used textbooks through the site. It’s simple to sell textbooks through half.com because the site has its own pre-filled information.

To sell textbooks, sign up with half.com for an account. Then, go through the Sell My Stuff tab at the top of the page. Choose the books category and enter the ISBN number in the blank. The ISBN number is usually found at the top of the UPC code on most books, though for some editions it can only be found on the copyright page.

Choose the condition of the book from the drop-down menu. If the book is in extremely poor condition, water stained or has missing pages, it is not eligible to be sold on half.com.

Sell used books according to their age and condition. If it is new but has creases on the cover or other damage, it can not be sold as brand new. Choose the closest condition to the book’s condition and then elaborate on the exact condition in the description box.

Set the price based on the book’s condition and the competition from other sellers selling the same book. The half.com system will show the average competing price for the book as well as the last price it sold for and what the current range of prices are.

Price the book so that it remains competitive within the price range, or higher if the book is in better condition than the other books listed. Buyers are willing to pay more for a book in better condition.

Sell Used DVDs and CDs

The same basic selling pages are available for a member to sell used DVDs and CDs as to sell books, but the seller uses the UPC number instead of an ISBN. To sell CDs and DVDs, however, means a close evaluation of the condition of the disc and perhaps a test play to assess the working condition. It is possible for a CD or DVD with scratches to play perfectly, but it should be tested before listing it as such.

To sell used DVDs, describe the condition of both the case and the disc inside. If the disc has no box, it may not be eligible to be sold on the site because of pirating concerns.

Sell CDs with a description of both the case and the disc as well. Any cracks in the case should be disclosed. If there is no case or there is a blank case with no artwork, half.com may consider the CD a bootleg and cancel the listing.

VHS movies are often difficult to sell on the site, but it is possible to list them as well. They should be listed with the condition of the box and the tape. The tape should preferably be checked first to make sure there has been no warping.

eBay Alternative

Half.com is an easy-to-use alternative to eBay. Many people use it to sell textbooks and other media items because there are no listing fees. Each listing is indefinite with no need to relist items after any set period of time. The site charges a flat 15 percent commission fee on each sale. Sellers are paid twice a month through a direct bank deposit.

Before trying to sell on Half, eBay, Amazon, or any other marketplaces, you should check out BookScouter.com to see how much you can sell it for directly. Often you will find that it is better to sell them directly to one of the sites on BookScouter because the listing and transaction fees from the marketplaces are pretty significant.

I've tried that site before, but that's a whole other ball of wax- checking the prices, having multiple selling accounts on different sites and keeping up with them all. I don't think that small-time sellers are willing to do a lot of that.

I did used to use Alibris, however, which places your book on a variety of sites. It provides a range of prices from various sites and lists them for you, and then you only have to deal with the one site.
